I spent more treasure than I ever had before (I'm an inveterate bargain-seeker on AH) on handsome Zatar, an Obsidian Iridescent / Forest Shimmer / Forest Crackle Imp. Then I spent time seeking a suitable mate for him, so that they could have beautiful near- or actual XYY Neon Wings babies with very dark primaries and lovely green wings and stuff. And I found young Brenka, a pretty Obsidian Tiger / Green Shimmer / Seafoam Imp, and raised her, and bought her a crackle tertiary, and today she was ready to breed, and ... .
You guessed it. They are 4th cousins or something.

jinxaire found me a green-and-black coatl girl. So now, I only have lair space issues and waiting time.
So many shiny dragons!

Date: 2014-05-16 12:27 pm (UTC)I think it's mainly so that it's not so easy to zero in on your ideal color combos, whatever they may be. That's why folks were so excited when the Assay Bloodlines tool in the Scrying Workshop went up. Before that, you had to either wait until you had two dragons ready to breed, in which case you wouldn't be able to breed them once you put them in the nest, or laboriously trace through their ancestry. Now you can check a prospective mate before you buy the critter.

Date: 2014-05-16 12:29 pm (UTC)If only the rules for breeding race horses were so stringent! Looking at the pedigrees of the competitors for racing's Triple Crown, I keep finding two and three ancestors in common in the last several generations.
I really think the FR limit is to keep the breeding difficulty factor high.
